As salaamu alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,

A sister has been Muslim for 23 yrs. and when she first learned to pray she was advised that when you pray you must:

in the 1st rakat recite a Surah (ex. Surah 24)
then in the 2nd rakat you must recite a later surah anything from 24-114 (but nothing before).... like the Qur'an has to be recited in order.

I never heard of this before and she wanted to check the permissibility of this.

So must you recite the Surah's in order? Or can you pray and recite Surah 114 in your first rakat and then Surah 110 in your Second??

Jazaakallahu Khairan for any responses.

Wa alaikum salaam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh,
Umm A'ishah Hasna

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

Some of the scholars have mentioned this, that it is recommended to read the soorahs in order in one's prayer, in the way you have described.  However, some narrations from the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) show that he read them out of order as well, even within one rak'ah.  One authentic narrations mentions him reading an-Naba' and then al-Mursalaat in one rak'ah, going against the order of the mus-haf.  You can find this narration mentioned in "The Prophet's Prayer Described" by Shaykh al-Albaanee.  Maybe you would like to list what is mentioned there to allow the readers of this post to benefit more, in shaa' Allaah.

And Allaah knows best.

Reciting Qur?an in order while praying; by Sheikh Fawzan

The following is a summary translation

Q: I have memorized some surahs from the Glorious Qur?an, and in my prayer I do not recite the surahs in order according to how they appear in the Mushaf. So is there any blame upon me if I do not read them in order?

Sheikh Fawzan: It is more befitting and more established to recite the surahs in order as they appear in the Mushaf. So the person will recite a surah in the first rakat and then in the second rakat they will recite a surah that comes after it, and they should not do the opposite, such as to recite a surah in the first rakat and then to recite in the second rakat a surah that comes before it in the Mushaf. This is in opposition to what is more correct because the Mushaf was put in order like this either by the text of the Prophet, peace and prayer are upon him, or by the Ijtihad of the Companions, and in opposing this action there is a great neglect.

But if you did this your prayer is correct, if you read a surah (in the first rakat) and then you read in the second rakat a surah that comes before it then your prayer is correct; but the action will be in opposition to what is more correct or in opposition to what is obligatory according to some of the Scholars.

Assalam-o-Alaykum

The following are mentioned by Shaykh al-Albaani in The Prophets Prayer please refer to it for the references:

Combining Similar Soorahs and others in One Rak'ah

He used to combine the pairs of the mufassal soorahs, so he used to recite one of the following pairs of soorahs in one rak'ah:

ar-Rahmaan (55:78)166 & an-Najm (53:62);
al-Qamar (54:55) & al-Haaqqah (69:52);
at-Toor (52:49) & Dhaariyaat (51:60);
al-Waaqi'ah (56:96) & al-Qalam (68:52);
al-Ma'aarij (70:44) & an-Naazi'aat (79:46);
al-Mutaffifeen (83:36) & 'Abasa (80:42);
al-Muddaththir (74:56 ) & al-Muzzammil (73:20);
ad-Dahr (76:31) & al-Qiyaamah (75:40);
an-Naba (78:40) & al-Mursalaat (77:50);
ad-Dukhaan (44:59) & at-Takweer (81:29).

Further, he (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) recited al-Baqarah (ch.2), then an-Nisaa'(ch.4), then Aali 'Imraan (ch.3) all in one rak'ah.  This is from the hadeeth of Huthayfah when he prayed the night prayer with the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) and said he felt like leaving the prayer.  It was collected by Muslim in his Saheeh.

Al-Albaanee notes, "This shows the permissibility of going outside of the order of the Uthmaanee mus-haf when reciting." (p.118 of "Sifatu Salaatin-Nabee")

And Allaah knows best.

as-salaamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

For extra benefit insha Allah, Shaykh al-Albaanee rahimahuLlah states in the footnote after refering to the list above (under "Combining Similar Soorahs and others in One Rak'ah"):
quote:
The first number is that of the soorah, while the second is the number of aayaat in the soorah. By inspecting the first of the two numbers in each case, it is easy to see that in many of these combinations, he (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) did not stick to the Qur'aanic order of the soorahs, so this is evidence for the permissibility of doing this, even though it is better to follow the sequence of the Qur'aan. A similar case is to be found later under "Night prayer". - from the translated version of the book, "The Prophet's sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam Prayer"
And Allah knows best.
