Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

Does anyone have information from the Ulama concerning performing Hajj in sandals that are sewn or have stitches in them?

This question is very common amongst the pilgrims, the reason being that the word used by the earlier and later scholars from the fuqahaa, and Imams of Madhahib when explaining the "shirt" and "saraweel" (loose trousers) mentioned in the hadeeth regarding what a pilgrim shouldn't wear in ihram is "Makheet" (مخيط). This word literrally traslates as "stitched". However it should be noted that the meaning of this word in the context of Ihram is not stitched as such, rather it refers to those garments that take the shape of the body parts, namely shirt, trousers and the like. They do however point out that these garmments can be used for ihram if not worn in the normal way, i.e. wrapped around the body.

This is how the ulema are heard mentioning this issue. The only condition that the ulema place upon sandals as established from the Sunnah, is that they should be below the ankles. And there is a good discussion in the books of fiqh whether or not a person who has no sandals cuts his khuffs down below his ankles or not, the clearest opinion Wallahu a'lam being that he does not as the Prophet (   ) said to those in Arafah during his Khutbah that if they didnt find sandals they could wear khuffs and he (   ) didn't say cut them. This is the hadeeth of Ibn Abbas, which came after the hadeeth which mentions cutting below the ankles. This drew many scholars to conclude that this was an example of a abrogation, and so they held not to cut the khuffs at all.

Assalamalykum wa Rahmatullah

One of our noble brothers may Allah reward him with much good advised me about my previous post in which I mistakenly attributed the word مخيط "makheet" (stitched) to the words of a hadeeth. As he said, this word is used by the fuqaha to explain the hadeeth about what a muhrim shouldn't wear, and not the words of the Rasool (Alayhi assalatu wassalam).
I am very grateful to him for this advice and due to that I realised that I had based that post on poor memory, for which I ask Allah's forgiveness.
The post has since been changed.
