As salamu alaikum

Perhaps some of the Salafis or the Salafi sisters could direct me to some info regarding the covering of the feet for women. Should her Jilbaab or garment be so long that it covers the feet or is it good enough to cover the lower part of the feet with socks or some sort of foot covering or should there be a combination of the socks and a long garment?

salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

this has been a good question [asked previously - especially about prayer at home - should she still have her feet covered?] and someone should help us address it by referring us to the proper sources and/or people of knowledge.

Wa alaikumussalam

Al-Allaamah ibn Al-Uthaimeen leans toward the opinion that the face, hands and feet of a woman are not part of the 'Awrah of Salaah. He says they are part of the 'Awrah that a non-Mahram man can't see. Therefore, if she is praying were there are no non-Mahram men then she can uncover her face, hands and feet. The Shaikh says the he follows Shaikhul-Islam ibn Taymiyah in this issue. The Shaikh speaks about this in his explanation of Zaad Al-Mustqni' under the conditions of the Salaah. Shaikhul-Islam ibn Taymiyah says that the reason a woman covers her feet, hands and so forth is to prevent fitnah. For this reason ibn Taymiyah was of the opinion that the face must also be covered i.e. to prevent fitnah (temptation) unless of course if she is around her Mahrams or women and the Ulamaa differ if the woman who sees the 'Awrah of a Muslim woman should she be a Muslimah or not. As for Salaah then it is an issue of "Akhthuz-zeenah" as in the Aayah:

 Al-A'raf (7):26

O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc.) and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, that they may remember (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth[]).

It was said: "I would prefer to be a tail in the truth than to be a head in falsehood."

Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) was asked: Is it mustahabb or waajib for a woman to make her dress long? Is wearing socks on the feet sufficient if the dress is shortened only so much that nothing of the calf shows? How should a woman lengthen her dress by a cubit ? below the ankle or below the knee?

He replied: What is required of the Muslim woman is to cover all her body in front of men, hence she is allowed to lengthen her garment by a cubit so as to cover her feet, whereas men are forbidden to let their garments hang below their ankles. This indicates that women are required to cover all of their bodies. If a woman wears socks that is doing something extra to be more on the safe side with regard to covering, which is something good. She should also make her garment long, as described in the hadeeth. And Allaah is the Source of strength. End quote. Al-Muntaqa min Fataawa al-Shaykh al-Fawzaan, 5/334.
