I was told that whilst praying, a person shouldn't fix his sight to the place of prostration because the hadeeth quoting that is da'eef, according to shaykh rabee and shaykh fawzee. hadeeth below:

Imaam Ahmad [Rahamahullah], quotes in his Musnad "while Rasulullah (Sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), was in the Ka'bah, his sight did not leave the place of his prostration until he came out from it" [Imaam Ahmad, Baihaqi, Haakim, Abu Dawud and adh-Dhahabi all declared it as Sahih (Irwaa', 1771).]

Please can the tulaab who have any info on this, post it, jazakaAllaahu khair. Note, the above hadeeth is found in shaykh al-albani's prayer book.
--------------------------------------------------------------

I found this hadeeth on this issue also:
Imaam Al-Baihaqi and Haakim, report that "Rasulullah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) used to incline his head during prayer and fix his sight towards the ground" [Baihaqi and al-Haakim reported it in al-Mustadrak, 1/479 said it is sahih according to the condition of the two shaikhs (Imaam Bukhari and Muslim),. It also has a strengthening hadith reported by ten of his Companions: transmitted by Ibn `Asaakir (17/202/2).]

Bismillah was-salatu salam 'ala rasulilah wa ba'd

Assalamu 3alaikum wa rahmat Allahi wa barakatu

Taken from the book "The Prophets Manner of Performing Prayer" by Shaykh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah Bin Baz (rahimahullah)

Page 3 Number 3

Leading up to this point is talking about what to do for salat until you  make Takbir and begin your salat...

3. Pronounce "Takbirat al Ihram" that is to say Allahu Akbar celebrating by that the greatness of Allah and looking meanwhile, downwards to the place where he will prostrate.

Some Misc hadeeth on Salat and looking hither and thither.

Sahih Bukhari 431-To cast a look at the Imam during As Salat
Narated Abu Ma'mar) We asked Khabbab radiullah anhu whether the Messenger salalahu allayhi wa salam used to recite (the Qu'ran) in the Zuhr and the 'Asr prayers. He replied in the affirmative.  We said, "How did you come to know about it?"  He said "By the movement of his beard."

Sahih Bukhari 432- Looking towards the sky during as Salat
Narrated Anas bin Malik Radiullah anhu  The Prophet salalahu allayhi wa salam said, "what is wrong with those people who look towards the sky during the Salat?"  His talk grew stern while delivering this speech and he said, "They should stop [looking towards the sky during Salat] otherwise their eyes will be snatched away."

Sahih Bukhari 433-To look hither and thither in as Salat
Narated Aisha radiullah anha: I asked Allah's Messenger salalahu allayhi wa salam about looking hither and thither in As salat.  He replied, "It is a way of stealing by which Satan takes away (a portion) from the salat of a person."

Insha'Allah i know this will be of little help because you may be in search of something more concrete.  I just wanted to share was Shaikh ibn Baz rahimahullah said in his book masha'Allah and some hadeeth to ponder.  Since I am a simple person in Islam this is of what little help i can offer.  Barakallahu feeki

Assalamu 3alaikum

Al-Hamdulillahi wassalaatu wassalaamu ?alaarasoolillahi wa b?ad:

I too was informed by some of the Salafis here in New York City that Shaikh Fawzee may Allah preserve him says that one should look directly ahead whilst praying and that it is permissible to look at the place of prostration. Looking straight ahead does not necessitate looking hither and thither. These statements of Shaikh Fawzee may be found on some recorded lectures he did maybe here in the US and Allah knows best.

Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

I would like to ask, where is it documented that Shaikh Rabee and Shaikh Fawzee, [may Allah Ta'Ala preserve them],state that the Hadith referred to is Da'eef? Only because Shaikh Al-Albani [rahimahullah] also quotes this same Hadith as Daleel in his chapter of Sifatu Salat-ul-Nabee [sallallahu alaihi wa sallam], translated: "TO LOOK AT THE PLACE OF PROSTRATION, AND HUMILITY", of which I see that the original Post is aware, al-Hamdulillah.

wa alaykumus salaam,

shaykh fawzee's wife made this comment in one of her lessons. other than that I don't know anything about it; so if any one goes to his (shaykh Rabee') lectures (like akhee Abdullaah lahmami) maybe they could kindly share anything they know about the authenticity of the hadeeth, especially since it's very important and where will the person who reads this post look towards in his/her next salah?!!

-Also, she said look to the place where you have the most khushoo'-

waalaikum salam wa rahmatullah;

Jazakallahu khair. I'm still curious as to documentation of the scholars concerning that the Hadith is Da'eef. Never-the-less, shukran.

as-Salaamu 'alaykum

This is an interesting issue. I had noticed recently that a few of the brothers that I know who had been blessed by Allaah with the opportunity to study in Dammaaj when our Shaykh, Muqbil bin Haadee (Rahimahullaah), was alive, pray looking directly ahead of them instead of the place of sajdah. I approached a brother to politely enquire about this, and apparently many of the students of the Shaykh, including the Shaykh himself, would pray in this manner. The brother said that he would look into this for me and get back to me when he has some Daleel inshaa'Allaah. may Allaah make it easy for him and reward him for his efforts.

Could any of those who studied in Dammaaj possibly provide some more information on this?

Jazzak Allaahu khayr!

As-salaam-u-alaykum
  I asked Abu Talha some time ago about the hadith that Shaykh Nasser brings regarding looking at the place of prostration during prayer and he said it was weak. Then he mentioned some points related to this issue.
1. There is a hadith where the Prophet (sallahu alayhi was-sallam) was praying and he was looking ahead to see if the expedition that he was expecting had returned.
2. The incident where the Prophet (sallahu alayhi was-sallam) grabbed a jinn in front of him during prayer.
3. The time when Jerusalem was displayed in front of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi was-sallam) during prayer.
4. The report of the companion about the recitation of the Prophet (sallahu alayhi was-sallam) due to the movement of his beard.
The above indicate that it is not possible for the praying person to fix his gaze at the place of prostration and still have those above mentioned events happen. Please note that I'm just mentioning the gist of what Abu Talha said and not quoting verbatim.

Al-Hamdulillahi Ta'Ala wa salatu wa sallamu 'ala Rasulullah

Amma ba'd;

Salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah;

From Al-Jami'-us-Sahih, of Imam Muslim [rahimahullah], Chapter "FOLLOWING THE IMAM AND ACTING AFTER HIM" aL-Bara' [radiyyallahu anhu] reported: They [The Sahaba-radiyallahu anhum] said Prayer with Rasulullah [sallallahu alahi wa sallam], and they bowed when he bowed and when he raised his head afer bowing, he pronounced "Allah listened to him who praised Him" and
we kept standing till we saw him placing his face on the ground and then we followed him." [Volume I, Hadith #960 and there are other similar narrations]

Just another example that the eyes weren't necessarily on the PLACE OF PROSTRATION, and Allah Knows Best.

as salaamu alaikum,

It would be very beneficial if one of the Tulaab could find out which Imaams of the past held the position of Imaam Muqbil, Shaykh Rabee' & Shaykh Fawzee on this subject.

When one prays in such a manner he will often be questioned regarding it and some of the general people do not know of these present day Defenders of the Sunnah.

The daleel should be sufficiant but when dealing with the awaam a little name recognition is often helpful.

wa salaam,

Al-Hamdulillaah, was-salaat was-salaam 'alaa rasoolillaah, wa ba'd: f...

It seems all the narrations are combined with the statement: "a person looks to the place of his prosttration in salaah, and if there is a need to glance or look away, a need related directly to the salaah, or a need to defend oneself or one's family or property, then it is permissible to do so, without turning away from the qiblah; and if he glances at something or someone without need, ie. out of forgetfulness or curiosity, and then returns his gaze back to his place of prostration, then this is not something desired however it does not nullify the person's salaah."  Refer to the 93rd and 94th baabs of kitaab al-athaan in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, may Allaah have Mercy on him, and Allaah knows best.
