What is the ruling on shaking hands or not when giving salaams when one is leaving a gathering or someone's home?
Also, what is the ruling concerning reciting Suratal 'Asr upon leaving?

Jazakum Allahu Khairan

The answer posted here by someone was deleted as it did not actually answer the question, and also we suspect that the answer was copied and pasted from one of the sites of the Qutubees.

Please do not copy and paste fatwas unless:

a) they are identical to the situation being asked about

b) they are taken from upright sound scholars, and not from the hizbiyyeen.

Men are known by the truth, the truth is not known by way of men.

asalaam alaikoum.
Bismillah.
It is Sunnah to say salaam. Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ?When one of you joins a gathering, let him say salaam. When he wants to get up and leave, let him say salaam. The former is not more important than the latter.?
(Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said, It is a hasan hadeeth. ).

As for shaking hands(with same sex or mahram) there is nothing wrong with that at all. We ask Allaah to help us to follow the Sunnah and to follow in the footsteps of His beloved, Muhammad  (Peace & Blessings of Allaah be upon Him). And Allaah knows best.

When  leaving one's house
It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: ?The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ?Whoever says ? i.e., when he is leaving his house ? ?Bismillaah, tawwakaltu ?ala Allaah, laa hawla wa laa quwwata illa Billaah (In the name of Allaah, I put my trust in Allaah, and there is no power and no strength except with Allaah),? it will be said to him, ?You are taken care of and protected,? and the Shaytaan will leave him alone.?? (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi in his Sunan, 3348. Abu ?Eesa said, this is a hasan saheeh ghareeb hadeeth which we only know through this isnaad. See Saheeh al-Jaami? by al-Albaani, 6419. It was also narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan (4431), where he adds: ?And another shaytaan says to him, ?What can you do with a man who has been guided, taken care of and protected???

Bismillah was Salaah was Salaam ala Rasulilaah

As Salaamu Alaikum

The following accounts may help to clarify and pinpoint the info that is sought in my original question, insh'Allah.

1.I am visiting another sister from out of town.  As I am leaving her place, I extend my hand alongwith my salaams. She takes my hand, and gently informs me that it is not Sunnah to shake hands when departing. I ask for evidence; she says it is taken from a class in which the teacher is translating the Explanation notes on Riyadh as Saliheen by Sh. Uthaymeen,Raheemu Allah.

2. From the same class, another sister calls me and informs me that they are being taught that  it was the practice of the Salafus Salih to say Suratal 'Asr  as they departed from one each other.  So some sisters have started doing this(alongwith the salaams) as they leave gatherings or telephone conversations.

3..After telephone conversations, some of us have been in the habit of saying,"Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, 'Ash-hadu an laa ilaha illa anta, astaghfiruka wa atoobu ilaika."(Glorified are You O' my ilah and I am in your praise, I testify that there is no ilah except you, I ask your forgiveness and repent unto you.

This hadeeth," The Messenger of Allah (salla Allahu alaihi was Salaam) said:'No one sits in a seating place in which he utters much confusion, but then says prior to getting up from that seating place of his: (the above duah), except that Allah would cover up for him that which occurred in that seating of his.'"

The above was found in a book of supplications saying that Al-Albani (raheemhu Allah)agreed with At-Tirmithi (raheemhu Allah) that it was hasan saheeh.

Any clarification by way of statements from the past or present ulema concerning any of the above would be greatly appreciated.  Jazakum Allahu Khairan.

Al-salaam alaikoum
the hadith says this:
Praise be to Allaah.

(Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said, It is a hasan hadeeth. ).
so anything added is an act of biddah...we should follow what hadith says and it doesnt say we should recite sura asr....n Allah knows best.

Reciting Soorah Al-'Asr Before Departing From Your Companions

Bismillaahi wal-hamdulillaah

was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alaa rasoolillaah wa ba'd:

Ash-Showkaanee mentions a narration in his tafseer, Fat-hul-Qadeer:

"#2998 - At-Tabaraanee collected a hadeeth in Al-Awsat, as did Al-Bayhaqee in Ash-Shu'ab, on the authority of Aboo Madeenah Ad-Daarimee, who had some degree of companionship [1], he said, "When two of the Companions would meet with each other, they would not depart until after one of them read Soorah Al-'Asr to the other, then they would give salaams to each other." [2]

Of course we can not know the authenticity of the narration without the chain.  So let us look to At-Tabaraanee's Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat for the chain:

"#5124 -

Had-dathanaa Muhammad ibn Hishaam Al-Mustamlee:

qaal had-dathanaa 'Ubayd Allaah ibn 'Aa'ishah:

haddathanaa Hammaad ibn Salamah:

'An Thaabit Al-Bunaanee:

'an Abee Madeenah Ad-Daarimee...

and then he mentioned the hadeeth as Ash-Showkaanee quoted it, and then said:

"'Alee ibn Al-Madeenee said: Aboo Madeenah's name was Abdullaah ibn Husn, and this hadeeth does not come from Aboo Madeenah except by this chain, by way of Hammaad ibn Salamah, and he is the only one who reported it." [3]

I will check the chain myself, in shaa' Allaah, since I did not find anything on it from our 'ulamaa'.  I will review it with Shaykh M. Baazmool before posting in shaa' Allaah.  I have a meeting with him tomorrow morning.

[1] Is companionship meant here that he was a Companion himself, or that he had (suhbah) companionship with some of the companions?  I don't know.  This is not important here since he is not narrating something marfoo' on the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).

[2] Fat-hul-Qadeer (5/610)

[3] Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat (5/215)

You are speaking above your level, please do not be so hasty.

Perhaps the sister could simply post the chapter from Riyaadh As-Saaliheen that they are studying and we could look into the statements of our father Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen, since they are recorded on tape and published in book form.

BTW - Does anyone know the shaykh of At-Tabaraanee: Muhammad ibn Hishaam Al-Mustamlee?

i just met with Shaykh Muhammad Baazmool at the university.  I asked him about the aforementioned hadeeth in a At-Tabaraanee's mu'jam.  He said the hadeeth is authentic and you can find it Al-Adab Al-Mufrad of Imaam Al-Bukhaaree and Ad-Durr Al-Manthoor of As-Suyootee as well.  Imaam Al-Albaanee has authenticated it in his checking of Al-Adab Al-Mufrad.  I have the book but I am leaving the house now.  I will look for it later in shaa' Allaah.

I also asked him about shaking hands when departing, and he said that "it has no asl (foundation) in the Sunnah, doing it all the time is bid'ah, thinking that it is part of the Deen and worshipping Allaah with it is bid'ah, however if it happens sometimes with no intention of it being part of the Deen, then it is no problem, as he showed me when we departed from each other.  Sometimes I follow him all over the university asking questions, like I was doing this morning.  So he had to attend to some other people's concerns, and had already answered about 10 of my questions, so he wanted me to stop following him, so he smiled and said, "As-Salaamu 'alaykum" and shook my hand.  I got the message and rolled.
