From the magnificent book ?Silsilah al-Ahaadeeth as-Saheehah wa shai min fiqhihaa was fawaaidihaa? by the Noble Imaam, the Mujaddid, the Mujaahid, the Muhaddith Abu Abdur Rahmaan Muhammad Naasir ud-Deen al-Albaanee (rahimahullaah).

Hadeeth No. 2549, Page 105

quote:

?Ibn ul-Khattaab did well.?

Reported by Ahmad (5/367): Muhammad bin Ja?far reported to us saying Shu?bah narrated to us from al-Azraq bin Qays from Abdullah bin Rabaah from a Companion of the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam), that the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) prayed ?Asr, then a man stood up to pray and Umar saw him and said to him, ?Sit down, for verily the People of the Book were destroyed because there was no gap between their prayers.? So the Messenger of Allaah  (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) said, ??the hadeeth??

I say: the chain is saheeh and its narrators are all trustworthy and they are the narrators of al-Bukhaaree, and the lack of knowledge of the Companion does not harm (the authenticity). The Companion is actually Abu Ramthah as occurs in the narration of Abu Dawood (1007) from al-Minhaal bin Khaleefah from al-Azraq bin Qays from him (Abu Ramthah), however al-Minhaal is weak.

And the hadeeth is supported by the hadeeth of Muaawiyah (radiallahu anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) ordered that one prayer should not be connected with another until a person speaks or leaves (the masjid). Reported by Muslim and others and its takhreej is given in ?Saheeh Abu Dawood? (1034).

And the hadeeth is a clear text for the prohibition of rushing to perform the Sunnah prayers directly after the obligatory prayers without speaking or leaving (the masjid), as is done by many of the non-Arabs especially the Turks. For we see them in the two noble Harams (Makkah and Madinah) and the Imaam has hardly finished giving salaam, except that they rush from here and there standing to perform the Sunnah.

And the hadeeth contains another important benefit; and it is the permissibility of praying after ?Asr, since if it was not permissible then he (Umar) would have reprimanded the man for that as well, as is apparent.
And this is in conformity with what has been affirmed from the Prophet (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) that he used to pray two rak?ah?s after ?Asr, and that this was not something specific for him.

And as for that which is authentically reported from him (sallallaahualaihi wasallam) that he said, ?There is no prayer after ?Asr until the sun has set.? then this prohibition is regarding prayer after the sun has become yellow, due to authentic narrations regarding that and the takhreej of some of them has preceded along with some commentary from the fiqh perspective under hadeeth no.?s 200 and 314.
