as-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu,
i am trying to gather proof for a sister who disputes the permissibility
of a woman leading other women in prayer. the ahadith that i have read mention that the Prophet-salli allahu 'alaihi wa sallam- appointed a muadhdhin for a women to lead the inhabitants of her home in prayer. also there is a hadith that relates that 'aaisha-radiallahu 'anhu-led a group of women in prayer. before i bring the proof (because i know the sister will dispute the permissibilty of a woman making iqaamah), in the case where there is no male to make the call, what proof is there that a woman can make iqaamah? also, is prayer valid for a group of women being led by one from amongst them, if the prayer is performed without the iqaamah because it was deemed that only a male can make the call? i was once in a very uncomfortable situationn while visiting another country and found the women praying individually, and when i made an issue of this, one sister reacted to my saying thus was a commission of a major sin. she referred me to someone else who was supposedly more knowledgeable, someone i personally know is indoctrinated with a lot of nonsense. can someone please assist me in this matter. in fact these people actually view as a sin that a woman lead others in prayer.

The Iqaamah for women

Question: When the women gather to perform the prayer, do they make the iqaamah for the prayer?

Response: If they make the iqaamah, there is no harm in that. If they do not do so, there is no harm in that either. This is because the adhan and iqaamah are only obligatory upon the men.

Al-Imaam Muqbil Al-Waadi'ee was asked about women calling the Athaan for prayer
Translated by Abu Sumayyah Aqeel Walker

Question: Is it authentically related from Ibn Mas'ood that he said, "How can we prohibit the servants of Allaah from mentioning Allaah?" This is while knowing that some of the brothers use this statement as a proof that it is permissible for the woman to call the Athaan in the house.

Answer: I do not know of this narration being confirmed, and it is not confirmed that the women used to call the Athaan in the time of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). In reference to the raising of the voice, then there is no problem with declaring it to be forbidden (for the woman). This is because Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, says:
"So do not be soft in speech, for perhaps the one in whose heart there is a sickness will lust for you. And speak a speech that is honorable." [Al-Ahzaab (33):32]
Thus, the woman should not raise her voice to cause temptation for the men. However, in reference to the woman calling the Athaan even without raising her voice, then this is not confirmed (either). And there is no harm if she calls the Iqaamah, even though I do not know of any proof regarding (her) calling the Iqaamah (either).

Shaykh Al-Albaanee Was Asked

Question: Is the Adhaan obligatory upon everyone that prays, even the person that prays alone in a masjid that has a (regular) employed Imaam in it?

Answer: Yes, for it is established in some paths of narration of the hadeeth of the man who prayed badly that the Prophet, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, said to him: "Make the Adhaan, then the Iqaamah."

So this is a command from him, sallAllaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. And from the principles of 'Ilm-ul-Usool (The Science of Principles) is that the rule with regard to a command is that it indicates an obligation, so long as there is nothing reported that would annul this (obligation). And there does not occur the likes of this annulling report here.

[Al-Asaalah, Issue #5]
end of quote

Shaykh Muqbil said he didnt know of any evidence for it as he (raheemahullaah) said:

"However, in reference to the woman calling the Athaan even without raising her voice, then this is not confirmed (either). And there is no harm if she calls the Iqaamah, even though I do not know of any proof regarding (her) calling the Iqaamah (either)". end of quote

However the daleel is sufficient in the hadeeth that Shaykh Al-Albaanee mentioned regarding the one who prayed badly. It proves the Wujoob of the The Adhaan & the Iqaamah even while praying alone.

not to mention some ahaadeeth that shows the blessings of saying the adhaan & the Iqaamah while praying alone, but for brevety we will suffice with what we mentioned.

With that said, The Prayer of the woman is the same as that of the man even with regards to the obligation of saying The Adhaan & the Iqaamah unless there is a daleel that shows otherwise. As far as the woman saying it aloud from the masjid then this is not allowed for her because it is prohibited in other texts for them to raise their voices in front of men.

Just as she says ameen in silent in the presence of men  during prayer but may say it loudly while praying alone or with other women, She May do the same with the Adhaan & the Iqaamah just as the man says the adhaan & Iqaamah silently or in a low voice when praying alone or other than a masjid.

And of course if there is a mu'adhin who calls the adhaan and Iqaamah then of course this will suffice for the man as well as the woman praying in that masjid or musallaa,,,,etc....
