As sallam ualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatahu

no.83 Ibn Umar narrated the Messenger of Allaah (Sallalhu Alayhee Was-Sallaam) had a ring made of silver, he would stamp (letters) with it and not wear it.? (Nasai no.5218)

Regarding this narration and the wording 'and not wear it', then in his checking of Shamail-ut-Tirmidhee entitled Mukhtasar Shamail-ut-Tirmidhee, Sheikh Muhammad Naasir-ud-deen Al-Albanee (rahimahullah) says:

"I say: Its chain of narration is authentic according to the condition of the two sheikhs (Bukhari and Muslim). And indeed, it was reported by Ahmed (2/68) and Abu-Ash-Sheikh (Page 130) with it being more complete than it, without his statement: 'and he did not wear it'. Rather, this part is Shaadh (irregular) with me...."

( Mukhtasar Shamail-ut-Tirmidhee Page 57, footnote 72)

Asalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh,

What exactly is the Shaykh saying about the part "and he did not wear it"?

Also can anyone comment on the permissibility of men wearing silver in
general... And also on women, insha'Allah.

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.

The shaykh (may Allaah have Mercy on him) meant that it is contradictory to the other established narrations of the same hadeeth as found in al-Bukhaaree and Muslim, that "It was in his hand (lit.), and then it was in the hand of Aboo Bakr, and then 'Umar, and then 'Uthmaan, and then it fell into the Arees Well (and was lost)." as mentioned after a few hadeeth in the same book.

This great muhaddith of keen insight (may Allaah have Mercy on him) understood from the phrase "fakaan fee yahidi" (lit. it was in his hand) that the ring was worn on his finger.  Based on this idea, he viewed the idea of him keeping it as a stamp while not wearing it as a contradiction to what is in the two Saheehs.

Shaath refers to a narration of thiqaat (reliable narrators) whose chain is actually connected and authentic in the first place, however it is judged to be a mistake as even the thiqaat make mistakes in their narrations sometimes.  Ruling on a hadeeth with shuthooth (calling it shaath) is often differed over amongst the scholars, as in this case.

The shaykh refers to this with his statement, "This part is shaath with me ('indee)..."  This is a subtle indication from a great scholar that others do not agree with this position.  It shows that he was extremely precise with his choice of words, may Allaah have Mercy on him.

Why would someone not agree that it is shaath (contradictory)?  Because linguistically, the phrase "kaan fee yadihi" (it was in his hand) could mean "it was in his possession" and thus there would be no contradiction: he kept it without wearing it + it was in his possession = no contradiction

as opposed to: he kept it without wearing it + it was worn on his finger = contradiction

there is a bit of contradiction there, although not absolute.  Someone would still have the chance to say: He used to not wear it sometimes, and wear it at other times.  One Companion negating that he wore it is only based on that Companion's viewpoint, and others could have seen him wearing it.  This is an important way to look at hadeeth in general.  However in this case, it CAN NOT apply, since both hadeeth are from the same Companion - Ibn 'Umar.

It is most likely that this great scholar of hadeeth - al-'Allaamah al-Albaanee - (may Allaah have Mercy on him) was thinking also in light of all the narrations about the ring/stamp, and he understood from them in their entirity that the ring/stamp was something worn by the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), and the view of a great scholar of hadeeth who had a broad base of understanding of the general body of hadeeth texts does not compare to someone who looks at a few chains and checks their narrators.

I hope that some of these words help in understanding the issue, and Allaah knows best.

Wa Alaykum Salaam Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Baraakatu

There are many Ahadeeth which show that Messenger of Allaah (Peace Be Upon Him) wore a silver ring:

Sahih Al Bukhari - The Book of Dress
No. 5487      - Narrated 'Abdullah:
"Allah's Apostle wore a gold or silver .. ring and placed its stone towards the palm of his hand. The people also started wearing gold rings like it, but when the Prophet saw them wearing such rings, he threw away that golden ring and then wore a silver ring."

Sahih Muslim - The Book Pertaining to Clothes and Beautification
No. 5223 - Anas b. Malik reported:
Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) wore a Silver Ring on his right hand which had an Abyssinian stone in it, and he kept its stone towards the palm.

...and there is a Hadeeth which states the permissibility of silver and the prohibition of gold (Allaahu A'lam if it applies for women also):

Sunan Abu Dawud - (Book #34, Hadith #4224)
Narrated AbuHurayrah:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: If anyone wants to put a Ring of fire on one he loves, let him put a gold Ring on him: if anyone wants to put a necklace of fire on one he loves, let him put a gold necklace on him, and if anyone wants to put a bracelet of fire on one he loves let him put a gold bracelet on him. Keep to Silver and amuse yourselves with it.

...and also there is a Fatwa given by our noble Shaykh - Shaykh `Abdul-'Azeez Bin Baz (Raheemahullah)explaining the silver ring and if it is permissible for women also to wear it.

Question:  What is the ruling on wearing a silver ring, and if so, in which hand?

Answer:  There is no harm in wearing a silver ring, either for a male or a female. It is also allowed to wear it on either hand, although the right hand is better because it is the more honorable since the Prophet (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) used to wear a ring on his, right hand sometimes, and on his left sometimes, and he is the best example.

The gold ring or watch, however, is forbidden for men to wear; from the many Hadeeths that mention this, only women are allowed to wear gold and silk.  And with Allaah is the facilitation to do what is right.

Shaykh `Abdul-`Azeez Bin Baz Fatawa Islamiyah, Vol. 7, Pages 394-395, DARUSSALAM

I hope this has helped you with your query.

as-salaamu 'alaykum

Is there any authenticated source that states the stone on the ring of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa salam) was an aqeeq stone [Carnelian stone]?
