Assalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu

A brother who is keen to seek knowledge and benefit from the duroos that take place in his area is having problems attending the duroos. His mother says that there should be a man in the house because the women are otherwise alone hence he cannot go. She does not have any other reason for stopping him from attending the duroos. Whats the best advice for this individual? JazzakAllahu khairan

The permission of the parents in seeking the recommended knowledge

Ibn Haani an-Naysaaboori said; I heard abu Abdillaah (Imaam Ahmad) when he was asked by a man seeking the permission of his parents in going out to seek Hadeeth and that which will benefit him. He said; if it is to seek knowledge then I see no harm if he doesn?t seek their permission in seeking knowledge and that which will benefit him.

Al-Marwadhi said to abu Abdillaah (Imaam Ahmad): Should a man seek knowledge and ask the permission of his mother while he knows that his staying is more beloved to her? He said; if he is ignorant to the fact that he doesn?t know how to divorce or pray, then that he seeks knowledge is more beloved to me, and if he knows these matters then that he remains with her is more beloved to me.

Al-Khalaal reports from Imaam Ahmad that a man asked him; I seek knowledge and my mother prevents me from that, she wants that I busy myself with trade. He said to me; Look after her and please her and do not stop seeking (knowledge).

Al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadi said; and seeking the obligatory knowledge upon every Muslim is the seeking of that knowledge that he can?t afford to be ignorant of. It is permissible for him to travel without the permission of his parents if there is no one in his country who can teach him the obligatory rulings and rulings and legislation of Islaam, as for if he knows those obligatory matters, then traveling is disliked for him except with the permission of his parents.

Taken from the very beneficial book by sheikh Hamd ibn Ibraaheem al-Uthmaan abu Anas حفظه الله  an-Nubadh in the manners of seeking knowledge.

Abunaa [Our Father] Sheikh Abu Abdir-Rahmaan Muqbil Ibn Haadee Al-Waadi'3ee [Rahimahullaah] was asked the following question:

Question: If a youth desires to seek knowledge and his parents prevent him or he desires to go for jihaad and his parents prevent him, should they be obeyed in that or is there a difference between them (seeking knowledge and going for jihaad)?

Answer:

As for jihaad, in them [in obedience and good behavior to your parents] is what you should strive in. It is not permissible that you should go when your parents have prevented you. As for seeking knowledge that which Allaah had obligated on you then verily, there is no obedience to a created being if it means disobedience to the Creator. Ahmad mentioned this in his Masaa'il of Ibn Hanee for verily he said: "I asked Imaam Ahmad about a man who was prevented by his father or his mother or both parents from seeking knowledge so he said "do not obey them, this is contrary to jihaad and like this also, had his mother prevented him from Salatul Jamaa'ah, he does not obey her in that and also Hassan Al-Basree also said something similiar to this.

Sheikh Naasirud-Deen Al-Baanee [Rahimahullaah] said: and for that, it becomes binding on everyone who desires to be upon this Manhaaj As-Salafee just as he studies the Book and the Sunnah it is also upon him to study what the Salafus Saalih were upon from amongst the Sahabah and the Taabi'een and the Atbaa'iee Taabi'een and that is because they are the ones who conveyed to us this Dawah upon the correct way.
