QUESTION

A woman had intercourse with her husband. She took a complete bath and then afterwards noticed that some of her husband's semen had come out of her vagina (after the bath) [1]. Does she have to take a bath again, since semen has come from her vagina? And what if she was engaging in sexual activity other than vaginal penetration and some semen from her husband entered her vagina somehow, and then exited, must she take a bath now since semen has come out of her vagina?

ANSWER by Al-Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisee, renown scholar of 6th-7th century and author of the outstanding book, Al-Mughnee, and many others

If a man is intimate with his wife, and does not penetrate her vagina, and some of his fluid (semen) makes its way into her vagina, and then exits, or he has intercourse with her in her vagina, and then she takes a bath, and then (after the bath is finished) some of the man's fluid comes out of her vagina, then she is not required to take a bath. And this is the position of Qataadah, Al-Awzaa'ee, and Ishaaq.

And Al-Hasan said, "She must take a bath, since the semen that came from him is similar (in ruling) to her own fluid." However, the first position is more correct, since it is not her semen, and it does not resemble (the man's) semen.

FOOTNOTES

[1] The man's semen is distinct from the woman's, about this the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:

(( ماء الرجل غليظ أبيض، وماء المرأة رقيق أصفر ))

"The man's fluid is thick and white, and the woman's fluid is thin and yellow..."

From an authentic hadeeth collected by Imaam Ahmad, Al-Albaanee authenticated it in Silsilatul-Ahaadeethis-Saheehah #1342.
