  Assalamu Alaikum,

Could somebody give some info. on the deviated sect known as the maturudeeyah.  What are their beliefs?  Who founded this sect?  And what exactly is the difference between them and the kullabiyah (the so-called asha'irah)?

Also can you direct me to any tapes or books on this sect.

Jazzak Umullahu Khairan.

As Salaamu `Alaykum, there was a summary of a book called الماتريدية - دراسة وتقويما  by أحمد بن عوض الله الحربي that was posted on anasalafi.net quite a while back. These are some points:

Point 1: There is a great deal of similarity in the `aqeedah of the Ashaa`irah and the Maatureediyyah and the actual points of difference are more or less clearly defined. In other words, they are clear about each others differences and have defined them, so that they can engage in mutual discussion regarding them. This is due to the nearness they have to each other, and they label both their groups as Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa`ah. Since, al-Ash`aree and al-Maatureedee most likely did not meet (in light of surrounding facts), it seems highly likely that the two groups, al-Ash`ariyyah and al-Maatureediyyah, both emanated from the Kullaabiyyah.

Point 2: So we can consider the aqeedah of both groups to be the same with the exception of those defined matters, and they are:
  1. The Ma`rifah of Allaah, whether it is obligatory by way of the legislation, or by way of the intellect
  2. The Sifah of al-Iraadah, whether it necessitates love and pleasure or not
  3. The Sifah of al-Kalaam, and whether it can be heard or not
  4. The Sifah of at-Takween (creating), whether it is an attribute or not
  5. The issue of burdening (takleef) with that which one is not able
  6. The issue of the wisdom and reason behind Allaah's actions, whether they are to be affirmed for Allaah's actions or not
  7. at-Tahseen and at-Taqbeeh, whether the intellect can know the good and repugant matters
  8. al-Istitaa`ah, ability, and whether it is connected to action (fi`l) and precedes it or is present along with the action
  9. al-Kasb, earning of deeds (in relation to al-Qadr)
  10. The Imaan of the Muqallid, whether it is correct or not
In each of these matters, the two groups have differing angles and viewpoints. But in general, their `aqeedah is more or less the same as each other's.

Here are three additional points of difference which are mentioned in the book ? al Maturidiyah?  by Shams as Salafy

1.Is it intellectually conceivable that Allaah can punish a compliant servant?

2.Can minor sins be attributed to the Messengers i.e. did they commit minor sins?

3.Making an exception in regards to Eamaan i.e. saying I am a Mu'min inshaa Allaah.
