Assalamualaikum brothers. I posted something else before but it didn't go through for some reason! Need to ask another question. My friend criticizes scholars for earning money from teaching the Quran and Sunnah. He says the salaf preached Quran and Sunnah only for the sake of Allah and didn't earn anything from it. Pls clarify. Jazakalla.

Walaykumus salaam, I don't know any of the 'ulamaa here who do not work. Many of them work within the field of public education, some work at other jobs. Some run businesses, some are even doctors, some work middle-class jobs. But they all do work regular jobs as do most of the students of knowledge that I know. As for saying that they accept money for teaching the Qur'aan, then this is just conjecture. A person who says this would need proof, which unless they are here and can inspect the paychecks and day/dunya jobs of the shuyookh, they cannot do. Be very nice to your friends when discussing this and explain that there is no way for him to know this; don't accept "I heard this" or "my other friend who lived in Saudi Arabia saw this" as it is just hearsay.
