  assalaamu alaykum.

There was a sister on Paltalk asking if it is permissible for a woman to travel to seek ilm without a mahram.  These are all the details she gave so sorry for the vaugeness.  Does anybody know the correct posistion with regard to this issue?

I understood, akhee Abaa 'Abdillaah, that you when you said:

"amongst the scholars are those who deem the seeking of knowledge fardh 'ayn (obligatory upon each and every muslim), and others deem it to be fardh kifaayah (if some of the muslims do so, then their act is sufficient on behalf of the rest of the muslims), whilst the raajih (concensus) on the issue is that it is fardh kifaayah"

you were referring to the detailed knowledge of Islaam, not that basic knowledge that the rasool (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) referred to when he said:

"Seeking knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim."

[Saheeh At-Targheeb wat-Tarheeb #70]

For this hadeeth establishes that seeking (some level of) knowledge is indeed a fard 'ayn, an obligation on each and every Muslim.  So this difference of opinion that you are noting here is obviously referring to certain branches of knowledge not being referred to in this hadeeth.

Please can you confirm that what I understood is indeed what you intended, and perhaps you can provide some more details to this issue of ikhtilaaf, so we can all understand how much knowledge is obligatory on each and every Muslim, and what kinds of knowledge are fard kifaayah, may Allaah reward you.

Also - the word raajih...  does it really mean concensus?  I think that was a slip of the keyboard...

Your brother
