If the main prayer hall in the masjid is full and you have to pray in the hallway or outside on the forecourt, do you still have to pray the two rakats for the masjid before sitting

  As-Salaamu'Alaykum,

Regarding your question, if you are still seeking clarity concerning this issue, Imam Abdur-Rahman Al-Afriki at Masjid Sunnatun'Nabawiyyah in Philadelphia, PA mentioned in the khutbah they asked Shaikh Ubayd Al-Jabiree hafithahu'Llahu'ta'Ala concerning this. When you say forecourt, to me it sounds like your saying a surfacepoint or position lying in front of the imam leading the salaah. If this is so, that the forecourt is in front of the imam, Shaykh Ubayd said that this type of praying is not permissible, that one who is praying in salaah should pray behind the imam, if one is praying in front of the imam who is leading the jamaa'ah in prayer, his prayer is baatil (no good) or not accepted. Specifically the two rakaa'ah upon entering the masjid should be prayed in the masjid or the area the administration of that masjid has designated as being the masjid Allahu'A'lum not in the maktabaah, sidewalk pathway areas, hamaam, and again Allahu'A'la wa'A'lum. You can contact IIIN da'wah center @ 215-484-4880 for the tape of last weeks khutbah or even the weekend telelink live where Shaykh Ubayd was recorded answering this su'aal barak'Allahu'feekum.

JazakAllaah Kheir for you reply, I am sorry I should made myself more clear. the Prayer hall is on the 2nd floor. at the side of the building is a basketball court which is part of the Masjid where the people prayer when the masjid is full. it is behind the imaam.

  As-Salaamu'Alaykum,

There was a conference here in Philly about a month ago where Abu'Khadeeja, Hasan As-Somali, and Dawud Adib, hafithahum'uLlahu'ta'Ala touched on issues regarding security, specifically masjid security. You can still call IIIN for those tapes for clarity as well and if I were you, I'd ask the masjid do they consider that portion of the building a part of the mussulla area or the actual masjid if so then comes forth your question regarding tahyaatul'masjid or the two rakaah upon entering the masjid wa'Llahu'A'lum.

Baarak-Allaahu Feekum - wa sal-Allaahu wa-sallam 'alaa Nabiyyinaa Muhammad,
was-Salaam 'alaykum wa-Rahmatullaahe wa-Barakaatuh.
