These lines of poetry are also quoted by Ibn Abdil Barr in "Jammi' Bayaanil-'Ilm Wa Fadlihi" with his chain of narrators to Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal.
There is a slight variation there though. Instead of "سبيل الهدى" in the last line, it reads "أثر الهدى".
Also in the first line it reads "نعم المطية"as opposed to: "نعم الطيه"  I couldn't figure out whether yours was a typo or you found it like that. Wallahu A'lam.
The muhaqqiq of this book also says in the footnote "and these lines of poetry have also been attributed to Abdah Ibn Ziyaadah Al-Asbahaanee as his statement, and refer to Sharaf Ashaabul Hadeeth Page 76"[end quote]

So jazakallahu khayran Abaa Tasneem.

See Volume 2 Page 782, Ibnul Jawzi, print I,1414H.

And for general benefit, to translate these invaluable lines of poetry it means something to the effect of what follows:

"The Deen of the Prophet Mohammad is narrations**How wonderful it is for a youth to carry narrations as his scroll.

Do not turn away from the hadeeth or its people**For opinion is night and the hadeeth is daylight.

And it is possible that the youth is ignorant of the path of guidance**While the sun shines high full of radiance"

(That poetry never did sound right in English!) Anybody is free to correct me if they feel that the translation is not miyyah miyyah

Wallahu A'lam

  Assalaamu Alaykum...

Just carrying on from what our brothers, may Allaah preserve them have stated above, then for the English speaking brothers and sisters, this poem can be found in the book "Clarification That The Alul-Hadeeth Are The Saved & Victorious Group" <Page 193/194> - By Shaykh Fawzee al-Atharee (Hafidahullah) (Published By Troid.org). The narrators of the poem are two, they are :

  1. 'Abdah Ibn Ziyaad al-Asbahaanee (Rahimullaah):'Sharaf Ashaabul-Hadeeth' Pg. 141

  2. Abu Zura' ar-Raazee (d.264H) (Rahimullaah): al-Arba'een of at-Taa'ee pg.107

The text of the poem in English (as stated in the book):

"The Religion of the Prophet Muhammad is narrations,
And what a blessed means to an end the aathaar are for a youth,
So do not forsake the hadeeth and its people,
So the opinion is night and the hadeeth is day,
And perhaps a youth may err upon the paths of guidance,
But the sun is rising in splendour and has many nights"
