Assslaamu alaikum
Is it permissible for a muslim to to be a member of these type organizations?

  Salaam Alaikum

Do you mean joining them voluntarily as opposed to being sentanced by a court order? (which is most often the case in the state I live in)

[IN RESPONSE TO THE POST BELOW]   I took "AA" and "NA"  to mean the following:  "Alcoholics Anonymous" and "Narcotics Anonymous" (group counseling for recovering individuals) If I am wrong then insha'Allaah the brother can correct me.

Wa alaikum as salaam wa rahmahtullah.

In the title the brother had n/a and a/a anonymous which are narcotics anonymous and alcoholics anonymous.  And the automobile association would be AAA (American Automobile Association).

  Salaam Alaikum

I think the brother asking about the Automobile Association is from the UK, so maybe it's called just AA in the UK.  Allaahu Alam

[This is not an answer, but an attempt to help everyone understand the question.]

Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous in the USA are Christian invented and Christian run organizations intending to help people cure themselves of alcohol and drug addictions through a 12-step program.  The group meetings include group prayers (holding hands & closing eyes), and regular readings of the "manhaj" of the group and its 12 principles, many of them based upon religious foundations.  They usually meet in church basements and other Christian places.  Each meeting has an introduction, group prayers, a speech from a member who talks about his personal problems and experiences and how the program has helped him/her, closing with prayer, and then socialization.

I have heard about some Muslims imitating such a program, intending to use the structure of their program for Muslims to help them recover from drug and alcohol problems, however, they are usually WD Muhammad followers.

As mentioned, there is definitely a difference between a Muslim going to these meetings voluntarily, and going because he is forced to by the law.

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmahtullah wa barakatu.

Just to add to akhi Moosa's post, those meetings involve the extreme mixing of men and women, with an unstated dress code of wear whatever you want. There is smoking outside these meetings. Profanity is used outside the meeting and inside, mainly during some, not all meetings. The socializing sometimes involves events with dancing and music. Everyone at the meeting are treated equal, including the homosexuals, lesbians, christians, jews, muslims, atheists, and other than them.

Some of the members may be given the choice of either do jail or prison time, or go to the twelve step programs.  Some may even get released early from jail or prison for attending those programs.  And yes some are court-ordered to attend.  Wa Allaahu Alam.

Can somebody tell me who were the Muslims who were persecuted, harrassed, beaten, jailed, imprisoned, dragged in the streets, tortured, mutilated, murdered, killed and other than that for adhering to the Islamic belief?  Barak Allaahu Feekum.

There were some Muslims here in Baltimore, Maryland who started an Islamic program, using the twelve step programs mentioned in the above post, as an guide, but I have not heard of them since one of the founders died, May Allaah Have Mercy On Him, Ameen.

I don't want to forget that all of the meetings open and close with the christian's serenity prayer, and in a circle as Moosa stated above, either holding hands or arms around each others shoulders, men and women both.

Something to ponder.

As salaamu alaikum wa rahmahtullah wa barakatu.
