Recently there was a question as to the history and ruling of a practice of the Kuffar that has become popular amongst some Muslims, the practice of the piercing of the tounge. As far as its history then tongue piercing was practised in a ritual form by the ancient Aztecs, Mayas of Central America and the Haida, Kwakiutul, and Tlinglit tribes of the American Northwest. The tongue was pierced to draw blood to please their gods, and to create an altered state of consciousness so that the priest or shaman could communicate with their gods, In the ancient temples of the Aztecs and Mayans, Shamens and High Priests pierced their tongues as part of a ritual to communicate with their gods.

As for the ruling, tonite the 17th of Ramadaan 1424 H corresponding with the the 12th of November 2003,I called Al-Allaamah Ash-Sheikh Ubaid Al-Jaabiree, may Allah preserve him, and asked him concerning this practice amongst the Muslims and the Sheikh answered:

"This practice is not permissible as it is imitation of the disbelieving people, and the Muslims have been forbidden from imitating the Kuffaar in their customs and practices like this so much so that the Prophet, sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, forbid us from praying at the times of the rising and the setting of the sun."

I then asked: "So should we say that this act is unlawful?"

He answered: "Yes, muharram" (impermissible)

  Assalaamu 'Alaykum,

Does this include the piercing of the nose as this too is a common practice among the Muslim women.
