  as salaamu alaikum warahmatullah

1. Is it ok for people to call me by baasit, rather than abdulbaasit?

2. & is the name eemaan permissible? If i recall correctly i have read that the name eemaan has self praise (?) in it and is therefore not permissible to keep.

Could some one be kind enough to post the answers.

JazakAllaahu khair

May Allâh help us and all the Muslims to understand His religion, to continually confirm us on it, stick to Sunnah and keep away from the innovation. Indeed He is Generous and Kind.

Abdulbaasit

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen was asked:

سئل فضيلة الشيخ : عن هذه الأسماء وهي : إبراز ? ملاك ? إيمان ? جبريل ? جنى ؟

about the names: Abraar, Malaak, Eemaan, Jibreel, and Janaa...

فأجاب بقوله : لا يتسمى بأسماء أبرار ، وملاك ، وإيمان ، وجبريل أما جنى فلا أدري معناها .

So he replied: "Do not take Abraar, Malaak, Eemaan, or Jibreel as names.  As for Janaa, I don't know its meaning."

rahimahullaahi rahmatan waasi'atan

For those of you who haven't been there in a while, there are now a LOT of books available for FREE download, and they all come with free software that lets you search the books!  Like 14 VOLUMES of his fataawaa for example, free!  Allaahu akbar.  Check it:

This, along with the other arabic books available for Shaykh Rabee's site and others, is a proof against any Muslim claiming to be a student of knowledge but does not have ARABIC WINDOWS (and can afford it)!!!

May Allaah reward the shaykh and increase his reward with this highly beneficial continuous sadaqah.

JazakAllaahu khair akh moosa, is it possible to get more detail and any references on why these names are not permissible, in particular the name eemaan.

Akhi unfortunately i cannot understand arabic and i couldn't therefore look into the Shaikh Uthaymeen, rahimullah site.
