Subject:  Yahoo! update...

al-Hamdu-Lillaahi Rabbil-'Aalameen was-Salaatu was-Salaamu 'alaa Ashrafil-Anbiyaa.e wal-Mursaleen, wa ba'd:

as-Salaam 'alaykum wa-Rahmatullaahe wa-Barakaatuh,

On 15 April 2001, we reported that Shaykh 'Abdul-'Azeez Aal ash-Shaykh recommended that Muslims boycott Yahoo! for its role as a porn online middleman. Further, Shaykh 'Abdullaah ibn 'Abdur-Rahmaan al-Bassaam said: "If boycotting (Yahoo!) means it will stop posting immoral material (then) Muslims must boycott it."

Therefore, based upon the fatwa, our concern was on two points:
i) Pornographics banners;
ii) Online pornographic store.

We were earlier aware that Yahoo! had decided to stop placing pornographic banners on its site/services, however, our concern regarding its online pornographic store remained.

We are now advised that Yahoo! has decided to stop this online trading store, as reported by the Chicago Tribune (dated: 23 April 2001). It mentions: "Yahoo! reacted quickly to the inevitable complaints, pulling its new store offline only days after it debuted. It also pledged to stop selling ad banners to porn sites, cutting off what was likely a significant source of revenue in hopes of purifying its image." (Ref: http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/printedition/article/0,2669,SAV-0104230016,FF.html).

Therefore, subject to the u-turn adopted by Yahoo!, inshaa.-Allaah, we shall return to maintaining our mailing list at Yahoo!Groups.

Baarak-Allaahu Feekum - wa sal-Allaahu wa-sallam 'alaa Nabiyyinaa Muhammad, was-Salaam 'alaykum wa-Rahmatullaahe wa-Barakaatuh.
