  Bismillah

Can someone please inform me about the people who insist on keeping thier hands straight down at their sides while standing in salat?  What are these people upon?  What basis do they have or claim to have for this action?

Salaamu aleyk

This is just what I know and insha Allaah the more knowledgeable amongst you will either correct or confirm the following:

Imaam Maalik (rahimullaah) was tortured and they broke his arms, because of this he couldn't raise his hands in prayer. His followers saw this and have copied this. So today you will find mostly maaliki madhab followers (Moroccan area) to pray in this way.

Wa Allaahu alim.

Na'am, I have learned since posting this question that it is as you have stated, the extreme Maalikee's who do this.  Also a sect of the Shia, specifically the zaidi sect in Yemen.  May Allaah protect us from their vulgar innovations and deviance. Ameen

assalam alaykoum

in moukhtassar "Sifaat Salaat al Naby (salla llahou 'ayahi wa sallam), Shaykh al Albaani rahimahou llah describes the way to put the hand after takbiratoul ihraam:
"hands are to be put on the chest only, and this is for men as well as women". and in a note he says: "as for the ahadith which mention putting the hands in other places than the chest, they are all da'if".

(this is in the french edition so i translated from french to english).

In shaa Allah, in order to complete the benefit it would be great if someone could present a reference for this story concerning Imam Maalik (Rahimahullaah).

All Shia actually, the reason why they do this is because they claim to blind follow Abu Jafr (ra).  Abu Jafr was one of the teachers of Imam Maliik (ra) , and Abu Hanafi (ra).  So Shia date this bidah back to Abu Jafr as well, and credit the Maliki because they say this innovation was taught directly to Imam Malik (ra) by Abu Jafar (ra).  These people say Rasool Alayhi Wa Salaam prayed with his arms up to his chest in Mekkah, and down to his sides in Madina.  They call it the Mekkaye Amal, and the Madiniye Amal. Its a innovation for sure though

You will also find in the Muwatta of Imam Maalik himself, the hadeeth where the prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم
said, I have been ordered like the rest of the prophets to put my right hand on my left hand in the salaah.  أو كما قال
