In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent the Most Merciful The stages a student of knowledge are to traverse upon by Ash- Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al 'Uthaymeen may Allah have mercy upon him Question: What are the stages that are appropiate for a student of knowledge to traverse upon? Answer: The stages that are appropiate for a student of knowledge to traverse upon in aqquisition of knowledge is that he begins with the book of Allah the Mighty and Majestic firstly. For indeed the Companions may Allah be pleased with them did not go beyond ten verses from the Quran until they learnt them and that which is in them from knowledge and action. Then (he learns) that which is authentic from the ahaadith (prophetic traditions) of the messenger of Allah sallahu 'alayhi wasallam and he should tread the most concise there is in that (which was mentioned) as long as he is in the beginning of (his) study. Then if he grows and progresses in his studies and becomes more zealous (for them) he begans to advance to the bigger books in which different opinions and debates are mentioned in them. And the one he returns to (for assistance) in that is his Shaykh who he is studying under. Because the Shaykh is the one who will direct the student to what he should read and what he shouldn't read.
