Topic: Advice Concerning The Qur'an

JameelFinch    -- 28-06-2008 @ 12:14 AM
  Bismillah,

Abu 'Abdur-Rahman Ibraahim Muhammad (1) said, "Taking a few months, a year or even two years to perfect the knowledge of tajweed (the rules of reciting the Qurýan) should not be considered a waste of time. If you were to listen to the recitation of many students of knowledge and inviters to Islam, you would not notice any difference between their recitations  and the recitation of the normal, everyday person who does not recite the Qur'an properly!? This is a problem and shortcoming that the student of knowledge and the inviter to Islam should try to correct in the beginning of their quests for knowledge."

* May Allah reward everyone who helped me with this small translation.

Do any of the brothers here know if this should be before starting to memorize the Qur'aan or alongside memorization?

JazaakumAllahu khayraa.

  Bismillah,

I had an opportunity to speak with Dr. Ahmad Bazmool today, and he said, "If a student is able to combine between the two (i.e. studying tajweed rules and memorization of the Qur'an) than this is good. For example: study your tawjeed rules for maybe half of an hour or so, then apply them to what you plan on memorizing for the day." End of Shaikh Ahmad's answer.

I ask Allah, The Most High, to make our actions sincerely for Him, just as I ask him to make our memorization of the Qur'an a proof for us and not against us.

I hope this answer was of some help to you.

No. 4607  - Narrated Aisha radiAllaahu anha:
The Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said,
quote:
"Such a person as recites the Quran and masters it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven). And such a person exerts himself to learn the Quran by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward."

Under the chapter "EXCELLENCE OF THE ONE WHO IS PROFICIENT IN THE QUR'AN AND ONE WHO FALTERS IN IT" in Saheeh Muslim:-
No. 1745 - 'A'isha reported Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) (as saying):
quote:
One who is proficient in the Qur'an is associated with the noble, upright, recording angels; and he who falters in it, and finds it difficult for him, will have a double reward.

Ruling and evidence on Tajwid of Qur'an recitation in Salah

The second question of Fatwa No. 10751

Q: Is following the rules of reciting the Qur'an obligatory during Salah (prayer)? What is the evidence for that?

A: Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) orders us to recite the Qur'an and to give every letter its due right. Allah says:
 Al-Muzzammil (73):4
Ãóæú ÒöÏúÚóáóíúåö æóÑóÊøöáö ÇáúÞõÑúÂäó ÊóÑúÊöíáðÇ

Or a little more; and recite the Qur'ân (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to recite the Qur'an in a slow style and pleasant tone by giving every letter its due right as if saying it alone. He also used to pause after every Ayah (verse) and prolong his voice in the letters that should be prolonged. He used to prolong the word "Al-Rahman" (the Merciful) and "Al-Rahim" (the Compassionate). Moreover, he used to seek refuge in Allah against the accursed devil at the beginning of his recitation.

May Allah grant us success! May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions!

Excerpts from some fataawa of the Permanent Committee

Q: Is it obligatory on me to recite the Qur'an according to the rules of Tajwid (recitation of the Qur'an)?

A: Muslims should learn the book of Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) from a knowledgeable person who is acquainted with the correct way of reciting the Qur'an.

http://www.alifta.com/Fatawa/FatawaChapters.aspx?View=Page&PageID=10358&PageNo=1&BookID=7

Q: Some young men and I have started to memorize the Qur'an, but some of us do this without knowing the rules of Tartil (slow recitation of the Qur'an) or the Tafsir (explanation/exegesis of the meanings of the Qur'an). Is this act permissible?

A: Muslims are required to memorize the Qur'an in a way that is free from Lahn (incorrect recitation due to mispronunciation of letters or grammatical mistakes). However, memorizing the Qur'an according to the rules of Tajwid (art of Qur'anic recitation) is recommended, if possible.

http://www.alifta.com/Fatawa/FatawaChapters.aspx?View=Page&PageID=10373&PageNo=1&BookID=7

Q: One of my teachers advised me not to get engaged in memorizing the Qur'an without having a shaykh in order to avoid making mistakes. Is this true?

A: It is better to learn and memorize the Qur'an at the hand of a good reciter who can recite well if this is possible and if it is not, you should try to recite the Qur'an in the way you are able because of Allah's Saying "Allýh burdens not a person beyond his scope."(Surah Baqarah 2: 286) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The person who recites the Qur'an with difficulty and falters in it shall have a double reward."

  بسم الله الرحمــن الرحيم

Insha'Allaah, this would be an aid in our learning to recite properly:
quote:
Rules of Recitation of the Qur'aan:
Following the advice of the Shuyookh (may Allaah reward them) above, it would be best if these rules are studied with one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur'aan. This is especially important as there are many things we may not understand correctly in the explanation (even though we may think we do) if we try to learn them on our own.

May Allaah help us all to recite His Book proficiently, understand it, act by it and teach it. Aameen.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Hadi (hafidhahullah) was asked, "Is it permissible to listen to the recitation cassettes of the people of innovation?"

So, the Shaykh replied, "By Allaah, it is more befitting that, that is not done, because sometimes his heart may become attached to him, and it was said to Ibn Seereen(by an Innovator), "Can I recite an aayah to you?", and he said, "No, not even half an aayah". Why? Because something of amazement with him might fall into his heart, and love of his recitation, and so he loves him from this angle, and thus he becomes a lover of the people of desires and innovations." In 1428H, Shaykh Ubayd al-Jabiri hafidhahullah recommended the Muslims to listen to Salafi reciters like Shaykh Alee al-Hudhayfee hafidhahullah and avoid listening to reciters like Mishari Rashid al-Afasy who is known for singing nasheeds in addition to other errors.[2]

Types of Hajr from the Qur'aan

Imaam Ibnul Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said:

Hajr (boycotting) the Qur'an is of different types

[1] To abandon listening to it, belief in it and not paying attention to it

[2] To abandon acting upon it, and not judging by it in the fundamentals and branches of the religion, and that it does not give one certainty; and that what its words/statements indicate of evidences does not lead to knowledge.

[3]To abandon contemplating upon it; to abandon seeking to understand it and acquiring knowledge of what Allaah intends by it and abandoning its remedies.

All these types of Hajr (boycotting) are included in the statement of Allaah; 'And the Messenger Muhammad will say: ýýO my Lord! My people deserted this Qurýaan' [1] even though some of these types of boycotting are less serious than others [2]
