Topic: The Bad Consequences of the Tongue Pt1

abdulilah    -- 23-05-2007 @ 3:26 PM
Taken from Nawawi's Al-Adkaar which I translated over 12 years ago mashaallaah and called it "The bad consequences of the tongue". This is an updated version.

Too much talk

Much talk makes the heart hard. It is not possible for one to reach the level of Khushu' unless he refrains from vain talk and occupies himself with much dhikr and tasbeeh.

Imam Nawawi rahimahullaah  mentions ?Know that is upon every responsible person that he should guard his tongue upon all his sayings, except a word that has some benefit in it...?

Allaah says :

?Not a word is said except that there is a watcher by him ready to record it.?

O brothers and sisters Allaah has placed upon us angels that record all that we do and all that we say. They do not disobey Allaah. They write everything down whether it is halal, haram, obedience or sin that we have indulged in.

?Verily your Lord is ever watchful (over them)?

?Know that is upon every responsible person that he should guard his tongue upon all his sayings except sayings that there is benefit in. When the speech equals both (good and bad) then he should leave it due to the (greater) benefit. The sunnah is to guard it because a permissable saying might lead to that which is prohibited or desliked. This is in many or most cases.?

Ibn ?Abbaas radiallaahu ?anhuma said  ? ?لَبِالْمِرْصَاد (ever watchful)? means that Allaah hears and sees.?

Ibn Kathir rahimahullaah says, ?this means that Allaah is aware of all that the person has done and He will call him to account with what he has done. He will give the person what he deserves with justice not with oppression.?

Yet You O brother, speak about other Muslims without seeing everything concerning them and without even weighing the severity of that which you say. But Allaah knows every letter you have uttered.

From the hadeeth taken on the authority of Abu Hurayrah  that the Messenger Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

?Whoever believes in Allaah and the last day should speak good or keep silent?

So whomsoever does not speak good and keep silent from vain talk then is described, by Allaah, as believing in Him and the last day.

Imam Nawawi rahimahullaah said ?I say that this hadeeth, which is agreed upon regarding its authenticity, is advice in not to speak except that it be good speech and it is that which there is benefit in and whoever has doubt about its benefit then he should not speak.?

Imam Shafi'ee rahimahullaah said ?If you wish to speak then it is upon you to think before you speak, If you think there is good in it then you should speak and if not then do not speak.?

This advice is from the scholars for one searching for the salvation from vain talk. We should ask ourselves :

Will this saying of mine please Allaah?
Will this saying of mine bring me closer to Allaah?
Does this saying earn with it obedience to Allaah?
If so then speak otherwise one should keep quiet.

Abu Musa al ?Asharee radiallaahu ?anhu said ?O Messenger of Allaah, which of the Muslims are better?? The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم  said ?Those whom the Muslims are free from harm from their tongues and hands.?

Sahl ibn Sa?ad radiallaahu ?anhu reported that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said ?Whomsoever guarantees me (that they protect) what is between their jaws and what is between their legs I will guarantee them paradise.?

This is one of the open paths to paradise. It is calling the people to come to paradise with the guarding of their tongues.

In the Sahihain on the authority of Abu Huraira radiallaahu ?anhu that he heard the Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم say ?Indeed a servant may say a word which he doesn't realise and he falls into the hellfire due to it further than that what is between the East and the West.?

In the wording of Bukhaaree ?Further from that which is between the East.? Without mentioning the West.

Imam Nawawi says, ? in the hadeeth above means he is thinking whether it is good or bad.?

One saying !! Subhanallaah

In Saheeh al Bukhaari(d.256) that Abu Hurayrah reported that the Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم  said ?Indeed a servant may say a word from the pleasure of Allaah and the servant does not realise it, Allaah will raise him up levels by it. Indeed a servant may say a word from displeasure of Allaah and he does not realise it, he is put into hellfire due to it.?

You remember the man who was one of the worshippers of Allaah from Bani Israeel. He was a good man. There was another man in his youth who disobeyed Allaah, a sinner. This good man would tell the sinner not to do these actions, and would remind him of Allaah, but the youth would say ?leave me !?  One time the good man witnessed the youth was committing a great Munkar (bad) and he said ?By Allaah, Allaah will never forgive you? So Allaah replied to this man saying ?Who is this that swears by me that I will not forgive so and so? I have forgiven him and nullified your actions.?

Look at the seriousness of this. One single saying nullified this good mans actions.

It is narrated in the Muwatta of Imam Malik and in Tirmidhee Ibn Majah on the authority of Bilal ibn Harith al Mazani radiallaahu ?anhu said the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said ?A man may speak a word from Allaah?s pleasure and does not realise it where it would reach, Allaah writes for him by it His pleasure until the day He meets him. A man may say a saying from Allaah?s displeasure and does not realise where it would reach, Allaah writes for him His displeasure until the day He meets him.?

قال تعالى:{إنا نحن نزلنا الذكر وإنا له لحافظون}
