  Bismillaah

walhamdulillaah, was-salaatu was-salaamu 'alal-Mustafaa, wa ba'd:

Imaam Al-Bukhaaree, may Allaah have Mercy on him, said in his Saheeh Al-Jaami' in his Book of Adab [1]:

"Chapter: The One Who Calls His Companion and Removes a Letter from His Name, and Aboo Hazm said on the authority of Aboo Hurayrah that the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said to him: "Yaa Abaa Hurr!""

And then in the chapter he brings two hadeeth: one where the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) called 'Aa'ishah "'Aa'ish",

and another where the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) called Anjashah "Anjash".

As for the mu'allaq narration in the chapter title (Aboo Hurr), Imaam Al-Bukhaaree brings it muttasilan in another chapter. [2]

And Allaah knows best.

  Baarakallaahu feekum Yaa Abaal Abbaas!

I remember the first time I heard this issue of calling Abdur Rahmaan ibn Sakhr ( commonly known to most of us as Aboo Hurayrah radiyallaahu 'anhu ) by this kunyaa was from Shaikh al-Albaanee may Allaah have mercy on him .

But at that time , I heard the shaikh say this - which was in 1987  [ and you know I am getting old ]  - the shaikh said the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam addressed him : "Yaa Abaa Hirr ! not Yaa Abaa Hurr !

For to the best of my knowledge , 'al-hurr' is either :

1-The lion who when he runs the sound of har-harah is heared or

2-A lot of water or milk , that when it flows you hear the sound of har-har .

And Allaah knows best!

  ahsantum shaykhanaa, maa shaa' Allaah.

Yes, this is correct, Abaa Hirr not Abaa Hurr.

I was only thinking of the shortening of the name, but it is not actually an abbreviation, rather it is returning the musagh-ghar mu'annath to the mukab-bar muthak-kar form, as Ibn Hajr mentions (11/332).

May Allaah reward you for that excellent point.
