In the Name of Allaah, the Faatir (Creator and Originator) of the Heavens and the Earth... "Al-Faatir" as a Name of Allaah was affirmed by a group of scholars, like: Sufyaan ibn 'Uyaynah, al-Khattaabee, Ibn Mandah, al-Bayhaqee, Ibn al-'Arabee, and Ibn Hajr of old. In more recent times, Siddeeq Hasan Khaan listed it, yet as-Sa'dee and Ibn 'Uthaymeen did not. It is derived from the first verse of Soorah al-Faatir: Faatir as-Samaawaati wal-Ardh (6:18), which is an idhaafah construction. Its like deriving "Maalik" as a name from "Maaliki yowmid-Deen". Thus, according to the listed group of scholars, it is generally permissible to name oneself "'Abdul-Faatir", al-Faatir being one of the Names of Allaah. However, using this name specifically is nearly unfounded in the lives of the people of the past. Ibn 'Asaakir mentions a Qur'aan teacher named: Abul-Muthaffir 'Abdul-Faatir ibn 'Abdir-Raheem as-Saqatee. This is the only 'Abdul-Faatir in history I could find mention of. And Allaah knows best.
