In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful...

If you were traveling and you forgot a prayer, and then you remember it after you have returned to your country, do you make that prayer up as a traveler or a resident?  Meaning: Do you shorten it if it was thuhr, 'asr, or eshaa' from 4 rak'ahs to 2?

And what about the opposite - You remember you missed a prayer while you were residing in your town, and now you remember but you are traveling... Do you make up that prayer as a resident or a traveler?

Hasan al-Basree (d.110) said about a traveler who forgot a prayer during his journey and then remembered it after he returned that he is to pray the prayer as a traveler.  And if a traveler remembers missing a prayer when he was a resident, then he prays it as a resident.

Similar was the verdict of Ibraaheem an-Nakha'ee and others.
