Did the Prophet Ever Call the Athaan Himself?
(sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam)
Al-Haafith Ibn Hajr (may Allaah have Mercy on him) stated:
Here is an issue that gets asked about a lot: Did the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) ever call the athaan himself?
As-Suhaylee mentioned that the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) called the athaan during a journey, and then prayed with his Companions, all of them mounted on their riding beasts, with rain coming down upon them, riding over damp ground. [As-Suhaylee said:] At-Tirmithee collected it with a chain by way of 'Umar ibn ar-Rammaah, narrating it directly from Aboo Hurayrah. End of quote (from as-Suhaylee).
However this hadeeth was not narrated by Aboo Hurayrah. It is instead the narration of Ya'laa ibn Murrah.
It was also the assertive conclusion of an-Nawawee that the Prophet (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) called the athaan once during a journey. He attributed the report to at-Tirmithee and authenticated it.
However, we have found this narration in the Musnad of Ahmad, with the same chain of transmission at-Tirmithee used, with the additional wording, "...And then he ordered Bilaal to call the athaan, who then called it..."
Thus it becomes known that at-Tirmithee's narration is abridged, and that the meaning of the statement that "He (the Prophet) called the athaan," is that he ordered Bilaal to call it. It is said (in Arabic) that the Caliph gave So-and-So, the scholar, a thousand (deenaars), while the Caliph never gave him the money himself, instead someone else did. The action is ascribed to the Caliph since he is the one who ordered it to be done.
And from the strangest things reported about the origin of the athaan is something that Abush-Shaykh collected. It has a narrator in the chain whose reliability was not established who narrates from 'Abdullaah ibn az-Zubayr, who (allegedly) said, "The athaan was taken from the athaan (announcement) of Ibraaheem (in the Qur'aan): 'And proclaim (call the athaan) to the people about the (obliogation of) Hajj.' [Soorah al-Hajj: 29] So then the Messenger of Allaah (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace) called the athaan."
Similarly is what Aboo Nu'aym reported in al-Hilyah with a chain of narration having narrators whose reliability was not established. (The report mentions) that Jibreel called the athaan for Aadam when he was sent down from the garden.
