  Assalaamu Alaykum...

I remember reading a fatawa (somewhere on the internet), that stated that a woman holding a baby during her salaah would be able to place her child on the floor when she is going into ruku' & sujood. The Question is :: Anyone have the link to it? Or know have the reference for it?

Baarak'Allaahu Feekum!!

  As salaamu 'alaikum

Yah Moosaa,

Was the salaah offered by the Prophet-SallAllaahu 'alaihi wa sallam-while holding a child a Nawaafil or of the 5 obligatory salawaat?

Some one made mention that it was a Nawaafil and so it was not "correct" to hold a child in the obligatory salawaat, is this correct?

NOTE: I made a mistake when I wrote the original question I mistakenly put the word "obligatory" instead of "correct"....I must have confused myself cus "obligatory salawaat" was on my mind...

  wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaah.

the scholars who explained Saheeh Muslim like al-Qurtubee, al-Maazurree, 'Iyaadh, used the phrase mentioned in the hadeeth as found in Saheeh Muslim: "I saw him lead the people in salaah and Umaamah was upon his shoulders" (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) to refute Maalik and the Maalikee scholars who specified this to be for the optional prayers.  some of the maalikees said it can be done in the obligatory prayers under necessity.  others said it was specific to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).  others said the hadeeth is abrogated.

upon inspection, none of these positions seem correct, since we need evidence to make something specific to the prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam), the hadeeth of umaamah came later than the hadeeth "verily in the salaah there are things that keep one busy", and to distinguish between optional and obligatory prayers goes against the apparent meaning of the hadeeth.  an-nawawee said, "all of those things are false, rejected claims that have no evidence".  [summary of what is found in fat-hul-baaree under hadeeth #516]

and look at the prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) how humble he was, and how much he loved and honored children, boys and girls alike!  and hasan and husayn used to play on his back while he was leading the salaah, and he would prolong his prostration until they were content!  how can the men of this ummah who truly take the messenger as their role model be mean and harsh to children?!  may Allaah correct our affairs.

and also - Umaamah was very special.  The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) advised 'Alee to marry her, and he did so after his death (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam).
