  As Salaamu alaikum;
Does anyone know the explanation of the hadith in Sahih Muslim where it states that Prophet Muhammad performed 10 rakat of the night prayer? Is that totally the night prayer or is the two rakat towards the witr included?
Barak Allaahu feek

Imaam al-Awzaa'ee said, "Patiently restrict yourselves to the sunnah, stop where the people stopped, say what they said, avoid what they avoided. Take to the path of the salaf, for indeed what was sufficient for them was sufficient for you."

  As Salaamu alaikum;
I would like to thank the brothers for posting those useful links. I was away for a few days and couldn't get to the net.  The issue is not how many rakat is permissible for us to make.  The issue is that there are a few hadith in Sahih Muslim where it states that Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him made 10 rakat of night prayer.  Now based upon this understanding, I find myself at odds with some of the Imaams here because they are saying that Prophet Muhammad made 10 rakat of night prayer.  I said if you want to do 10, 20, etc. fine, but don't say that Muhammad ibn Abdullaah peace and blessings be upon him did it.  That is why I am requesting that if anyone has the sharh of that/those hadith please post it.
