As Salaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatu Allaah ... I recall a post last year regarding the issue of burning Bukhoor while fasting; however, I cannot seem to find it. If anyone can provide this link, I'd appreciate it. Baaraka Allaahu feekum. Akhookum, Aboo 'Abdil-Fattaah أخوكم أبو عبد الفتـــاح Aboo 'Abdil-Fattaah

A noble sister e-mailed me the following from www.fatwa-online.com: Imaam rebuked me for using perfume whilst fasting Question: I applied perfume on myself before the Dthuhr (noon) prayer in Ramadhaan and when I entered the mosque, the Imaam rebuked me and said that my fast has been nullified and so has the fast of all those who smelt (the scent) because it is very strong. How far is this statement correct? Response: There is no problem in applying perfume whilst fasting and this does not affect the prayer except if the perfume is incense-based and one intentionally smells it. This is because the smoke from the incense enters the nose and activates the brain and thereby affects the fast. As for perfumes, then there is no problem for one who is fasting to use them. It is not permissible for this Imaam to give a fatwa (legal ruling) without (sound) knowledge. Shaykh Ibn Fowzaan Fataawa Ramadhaan - Volume 2, Page 500, Fatwa No. 454; al-Fatawaa libni-Fowzaan - Volume 1, Fatwa No. 151 Is there some narration upon which this prohibition is based (i.e. smelling incense while fasting) and a discussion of its authenticity? Jazaakumu Allaahu khayran. أخوكم أبو عبد الفتاح أخوكم أبو عبد الفتـــاح Aboo 'Abdil-Fattaah

Wa'alaykumussalaam wa rahmatullaah Shaykh Fawzee Al Atharee hafithahullaah mentioned today in his lesson that bukhoor and perfume do not affect the fast. He stated that Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullaah mentioned in his book 'Haqeeqatus Siyaam' that the fast is not affected even if it enters the nose and mouth as it is not considered to be food or drink. If someone could post the quote from the book inshaa'Allaah it would be useful.

Assalaamu'alaykum, jazaakAllaahu khayr. I'm assuming the quote is from the book mentioned. If so astaghfirullaah, it seems that at least some of what Shaykh Fawzee said was not intended to be a direct quote from it. Could someone enlighten me regarding the intended meaning of غترة in the last line of the quote: ويدنيه من غترته JazaakumAllaahu khayr

a ghutrah is like a shimaagh ( شماغ ), they are both khimaars worn by men here, except that the white one is often referred to as a ghutrah and the red one is often called a shimaagh.
