Salaam 'alaykum wa Rahmatullaah wa Barakatu,

Is sujood-us-sahw also performed when one forgets during his optional prayers?

In Fiqh made Easy, Mus'alah # 2 (Sujood as-Saho), Abu Abdurrahman as Salafee al Kanadi on www.salafitalk.net posted the following :

<< When it (Sujood as-Saho) should and should not be done:

It is lawful to offer the Sujood of Saho in a Fard (compulsory) prayer and a Nafilah (supererogatory) prayer.

It cannot be offered for the following: the Jinazah prayer, Sujood of tilawah (sujood during recitation of certain Qur'anic ayat), Sujood of Shukr (Sujood of thanks to Allah), and for the Sujood of Saho itself.

It should not be offered for the Jinazah prayer, for a simple fact, that being there is no Sujood in the Jinazah prayer, thus doing it for it, would be introducing something into this Salah, which is not of it.

As for the Sujood of Tilawah, if one offers sujood as-Saho for it, he would be increasing over the original sujood, i.e. the sujood of Tilawah is only one Rakah, and the sujood of Saho is two Rakah.

As for the Sujood as-Saho itself, were it lawful to make sujood of Saho for the very same Sujood (i.e. if one makes a mistake when making the sujood of as-Saho), it would lead to something called at-Tasalsul, or in plain English a 'chain reaction', such that it would never end.

Cases:

1. If a person increases in his prayer something from the prayer, such as adding an extra standing in a place where the person should be sitting during the prayer, or the like, intentionally, his prayer would be rendered null and void according to the consensus of the scholars, and according to the words of the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, in the Hadeeth of Ibn Masood, may Allah be pleased with him: 'If the man increases in his prayer or decreases let him make two sujood.' (Muslim)

2. If a person gets up in a four unit prayer (such as Dhuhr/Asr/Isha) to offer a fifth Rakah, and is not aware of that, until he completes it, he would only have to offer the sujood as-Saho, and this is the opinion of the majority of scholars of them, Imam Malik, Shafi'ee, An-Nakhai'ee, Az-Zuhri, and others. The proof of this is in the Hadeeth of Ibn Masood, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, prayed five Rakah, and when he finished they said to him, you have prayed five, he then returned and prayed two Rakah. (Agreed Upon).

3. If he knows of the increase during it (i.e. if he has gotten up for the fifth Rakah), he should sit immediately, without making Takbeer, the reason for this is that if he does not sit, he would increase in the prayer intentionally and thus render his prayer null and void.

4. If the person praying behind the Imam realizes the Imam's mistake, he should say 'Subhanallah' in an audible voice (if he is a man), and if the person is a women she should clap her hands, to inform the Imam of his mistake. >>

Ibn Umar (d. 84H) said: "Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people see it as something good." (Reported by Abu Shaamah no. 39)

In the previous post it is stated:

"3. If he knows of the increase during it (i.e. if he has gotten up for the fifth Rakah), he should sit immediately, without making Takbeer, the reason for this is that if he does not sit, he would increase in the prayer intentionally and thus render his prayer null and void. "

What if the person did not know the ruling on whether to sit back down straight away but still knew they needed to make sajdah sahu.  Ie they continued not knowing, and not sure if they should have sat down and then prayed sajdah sahu??
